If you need any further support to get the most out of your connection, or things aren’t going as hoped, get in touch.

Guidelines and Instructions
Mentoring Guidelines
Connect with a leader of your choice, who is experienced in the area you need – and who is willing to engage.
Definition: “Mentoring involves intentional relationships in which a mentor imparts knowledge, skills or values from their experience to a person or group of people they believe in, who are teachable and responsive and desire to develop their potential.”
Mentoring is one of the most fruitful, yet underused, methods for personal growth. Having someone to talk to who will summon you to the next stage of development or breakthrough in your life is incredible. The process is enriching for you and rewarding for the mentor. So we want to connect you with leaders of experience, who are able to pass on their knowledge and wisdom.
There are many and varied styles of mentoring and each of the leaders available will take a slightly different approach, but you will have an opportunity of an initial orientation together to see how you can connect as leaders. From that point you can determine how many sessions are necessary to talk and process the areas of your need.
Take a look at the profiles of those who have put themselves forward and connect directly with them to set up an online session. To view our list of Mentors, go ahead and see below.
Guidelines for ELLC in mentoring, coaching, debriefing and spiritual advice
- Establish the time frame of the relationship – for example, start with a one off session to explore the issues you want to talk through and clarify expectations together. Then you may decide on a series of 3 sessions with a review at the end to see if the relationship is going well and you would like to continue for a further number of sessions?
- Agree on the platform you will be using for the sessions – zoom, skype, whatsapp, messenger, etc.
- Generally, keep each session to 1 hour.
- Agree on the next meeting date, at the end of each session.
- If a session has to be cancelled please give the other person adequate time for them to reschedule their diary. If there are two no-shows from the individual receiving input, without reason beforehand, the relationship needs to be reviewed and possibly terminated.
- Establish confidentiality in the relationship with nothing shared outside the relationship without permission.
- Clarify where responsibility and/or accountability lies. For example, if I am mentoring, coaching or debriefing someone in another location, it doesn’t mean that my counsel supersedes what they may be being advised or asked to do by their own base or national leadership. In some cases, the individual has complete freedom to make their own decisions and policies, while in other cases they may be accountable to another team or to a geographical leadership.
Possible time frame for mentoring, coaching, debriefing and spiritual advice
- Mentoring is more flexible and depends on the individuals and the aspect of mentoring.
- Coaching is usually every 2 weeks in order to have time for action steps in between.
- For debriefing the sessions are more ideal over a short time frame – for example: each morning for 2 hours over 3 days.
If you think that you could become a Mentor, then we want to hear from you. Make sure you get in touch and we will get back to you.
Coaching Guidelines
Experience informal coaching from a range of experienced and capable leaders all across Europe.
Definition: Through the skilful use of good questions, the coach helps a client to set an objective, explore options, make good decisions and put those decisions into action.
If you are wanting to make decisions, develop plans or solve problems, make a change or develop new habits then a coach will be very helpful. If on the other hand, you are wanting to learn the basic skills of a job or step into a new role that you haven’t had any experience with, then look for a mentor not a coach.
A coach isn’t necessarily an expert in any of the areas that you want to see change in, but they are expert in asking questions to draw out the various elements that you need to think about to make the best decision and action step.
Connect with your coach:
In YWAM Europe we have a growing number of leaders who have completed the YWAM Coach training – FOCOS, who are willing to meet 1 on 1 to give you specific guidance and input in the areas of growth that you have identified.
Take a look at the profiles of those who have put themselves forward and connect directly them to set up an online session. To view our list of Coaches, go ahead and see below.

Debriefing Guidelines
Sign up for a single session or plan a series of sessions depending on your need.
Definition: To help people integrate their experience into life as a whole, perceive the experience more meaningfully & bring a sense of closure.
If we are going to integrate our experiences, both positive and negative, we need to talk them through with someone who can guide us and help us emerge with lessons learned and offer help in identifying how to bring closure.
There is a tendency for us to go from one project to the next without taking any time to reflect and process the various issues we have had to experience. Stress from experiences tends to be accumulative and without help in identifying those stresses, highs and lows, and working them through we can end of with layer upon layer of pressed down issues.
Perhaps you have moved to or traveled back from, a very different culture and are needing some support to find your feet or maybe you have had a challenging experience that has brought many questions or confusion and left you without any sense of closure of the event.
The main job of a debriefer is to be an active listener to your story, ask open ended questions to draw out the issues and to give the time to process the issue or event thoroughly.
Take a look at the profiles of leaders who have made themselves available as debriefers and connect directly with them to set up an online session. To view our list of Debriefers, go ahead and see below.

Spiritual Direction
Spiritual Direction
Definition: A spiritual director is quite simply someone who will accompany you on your spiritual journey by listening well, both to you and to God.
By asking questions that help to deepen your process, a spiritual director can support you in noticing God’s presence and activity in your life of faith in ways that help you to respond to this personally communicating God, to grow in intimacy with him, and to live out the consequences of the relationship. Spiritual direction may take place one-on-one or as part of a group.
Spiritual direction is different from a normal approach to one-on-ones or leading a small group, as well as from counselling or coaching. In spiritual direction the person can bring anything to the conversation and the spiritual director will use open questions to help the person pay attention to the ways God is with them and inviting them to engage with God within their experience. They will not generally offer advice, teaching or solutions, but rather wait on God for his presence and communication with the person. Listening well, reformulating, asking good questions, spending time in silence, and connecting with our emotions are useful tools in the process.
While the name ‘spiritual direction’ gives the sense of one person ‘directing’ another, in fact spiritual directors are trained to see God as the true director and their role, then, as creating space for the person they are accompanying to grow in awareness of God’s direction. For this reason, spiritual directors might also be called spiritual companions. Typically, a spiritual director would meet with his or her ‘directee’ once a month, knowing their time together has significance in the eyes of God.
While spiritual direction has its roots in Orthodox and Catholic traditions, over many years it has become an established ministry across all streams of the Church. Over the past 20 years in particular, spiritual direction has become more well known in Protestant traditions. The core of spiritual direction is to hear the voice of God together, to become aware of the movement of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life and to pay attention to how he might be leading or guiding him or her. You can find out more by watching this short video.
Within YWAM we have a growing number of trained spiritual directors who are especially attuned to the ways that crossing cultures, while often uncomfortable, can open us to new ways of growing in our walk with God.
Guidelines for ELLC in mentoring, coaching, debriefing and spiritual direction
Possible time frame for mentoring, coaching, debriefing and spiritual direction
- Mentoring is more flexible and depends on the individuals and the aspect of mentoring.
- Coaching is usually every 2 weeks in order to have time for action steps in between.
- For debriefing the sessions are more ideal over a short time frame – for example: each morning for 2 hours over 3 days.
If you think that you could help someone with spiritual direction on a particular topic, then we want to hear from you. Make sure you get in touch and we will get back to you.

She can also be found exploring the countryside and ruins of the beautiful isle, cooking up healthy concoctions, and taking in a good book by the fire. |
| Anna Cleghorn | Anna is originally from Hawaii. She has a B.A. in Art & Education from Seattle Pacific University. It was during her time at university God called her into missions, and in 1986 she did a Discipleship Training School with YWAM in Kona, HI. Anna currently lives and works in Montana, USA and works with the YWAM Lakeside campus. She has worked with the Debriefing department since 2010 and previously worked in a variety of capacities (DTS, SOW, SBS, Titus Project, Biblical Teaching & Preaching School along with other logistical positions). Anna was drawn to Spiritual Formation and Direction and in 2018 was certified in Spiritual Direction from Christian Formation & Direction Ministries, Pacific Northwest. Through her work, Anna has discovered that every person’s story is remarkable, and it is a great privilege to listen to each one. She has a heart for people to find perspective, healing and a space to hear God’s voice. |
| Steve Cochrane | Steve has been accompanying people in spiritual direction since 2013. He received his training and certificate to practice through the Selah contemplative community based in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Steve has served with Youth With a Mission (YWAM) since 1979, leading the first long term work of YWAM in India in 1982. Steve and his wife Elisabeth continue to spend portions of their year in India as well as the US. |
| Nadine Gascho | Having lived and ministered in many nations (as a TCK in Zambia, and then with YWAM in Australia, Malaysia, Scotland, and BC, Canada), Nadine now lives in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. After years of being single in ministry (having joined YWAM in 1999), she now is married and a grandmother of nine. Although her background is in elementary education, ESL, and SBS, Nadine became a certified spiritual director through Soul Stream, Canada, in 2014. Her current focus is in Member Care and primarily in offering spiritual direction to missionaries. As a life-long learner, she enjoys relating with others through ethnic foods, books, and cozy coffee shops. She most deeply connects with God through Scripture, being out in nature (often with her camera), in silence, and through corporate worship. Spiritual Direction, as a conversation between two people, is an invitation to listen for Life: for how God is actively present in our daily living and pursuing us in love. As a spiritual companion, Nadine will support you in your desire to deepen your relationship with God. She offers you a safe space to share your story and explore the journey of your heart. With the focus on listening for how God is present, she looks to the leading of the Holy Spirit (as the true Spiritual Director). Whether meeting in-person or through video conferencing, the session with you is an unhurried, contemplative space. |
| Miranda Heathcote | Miranda joined Youth With A Mission, with her husband Tim, to help pioneer a new location in Mozambique in 1998. For the next 14 years, their focus was on supporting new and small teams throughout southern Africa. In 2012, they moved to Europe at which point Miranda’s work became more specifically focused on spiritual formation or, as she puts it, how people grow. For the past several years Miranda has lived in southern Spain. She has a real heart for creating a space where people can be real about the challenges of life in cross-cultural mission contexts, and encounter the God who is with them in the midst of their real lives. Both online and in person, Miranda offers debriefing, spiritual direction and leadership development. She has a special interest in how our spirituality relates to being embodied, and she offers guided art processes as part of individual or group spiritual direction. Miranda is on staff with the Deepen program in relational spiritual formation, through which they are training cross-cultural workers as certified spiritual directors, several of whom are also part of YWAM. |
